Kabylia, Lonely Facing Fires

By President Ferhat Mehenni on X

Kabylia has been burning for more than fifteen days. Not only has no one come to its aid, but the outbreaks of fire, reportedly started using incendiary powders and other fire-setting materials, appear to be coordinated in a way that surrounds villages and prevents residents from effectively fighting the flames.

Kabyle citizens are battling fires with their bare hands.

No international appeal for assistance has been made by the colonial authorities. The absence of state assistance in Kabylia in the face of this tragedy is glaring. The authorities seem to intervene only to arrest political activists.

This tragic episode, in my view, illustrates the absence of effective protection for Kabylia by the Algerian state. With its own state and restored as an independent nation, Kabylia could equip itself with the means to prevent and effectively combat the wildfires it faces every summer.

Freedom for Kabylia and all its children.

Long live the Federal Republic of Kabylia!
