(Los Angeles, USA)–It is good news for Kabylia’s detainees who are rotting in the Algerian prisons, particularly, those who were sentenced to death under spurious charges of the Algerian dictatorship. Thus, for the first time in history, Kabylia’s human rights activists took part in Amnesty’s International regional conference in Los Angles–RAC26 under Amnesty International group #1039.
This human rights campaign is being held at the Japanese American museum, from 3 to 4 October 2026. It is an opportunity for human rights advocates to gather, share and expose their main concerns about human rights abuses that threaten human lives in the US or abroad.
Therefore, the Kabylian activists have a tremendous opportunity to run a workshop advocacy in which they exposed and displayed numerous human rights violations in Kabylia by the Algerian military regime, through photos and documents to raise awareness of Amnesty’s members and American citizens. The workshop was successful, it attracted curious activists who approached the Kabylian activists, sought to learn more about Kabylia’s case, and there were interesting and constructive exchanges according to Khaled Cherik – a participant in this campaign.
Also, aside from the workshop, they intervened in conferences and delivered a grim speech about the smothering of fundamental human rights in Kabylia that have been eroded since 2021. They indeed highlighted the tightening of freedom of speech that led numerous Kabylian activists to be arrested and imprisoned, or the made-up accusations of terrorism which targeted Kabylia’s political activists who struggle for the rights of self-determination of Kabylia.
Arezqi Lvacir, a participant of the conference said,“we cannot stay silent about the rampant repression in Kabylia, it is our duty to let the world know what Kabylia is enduring”. “No one will fight for the rights of Kabylian, but Kabylians”.
This is a truly commendable initiative, because the presence of the Kabylian activists in these major and crucial events brings the issue and concerns of Kabylia’s detainees directly to the international audience and calls for a greater attention to the human rights situation in Kabylia. The kabylian community abroad need to multiply and amplify this kind of campaign to put a constant pressure on the Algerian military junta to abate the quelling of freedom of speech, political and civil activism.
