(Kabylia)–As the anniversary of the assassination of Améziane Mehenni approaches, many Kabyles pause to remember a young man whose life was cut short under tragic circumstances. More than two decades later, his name continues to symbolize both personal loss and the enduring struggle for dignity, justice, and freedom.

Améziane was not only the son of Ferhat Mehenni, a prominent Kabyle political figure; he was also a devoted son, a trusted friend, and a valued collaborator who shared his father’s commitment to serving his people. His death left a profound wound not only within his family but also among those who believed in the ideals he represented.

On the night of June 18–19, 2004, Améziane Mehenni was fatally stabbed in Paris. Despite the passage of many years, the circumstances surrounding his death have never been fully clarified. For many observers, the tragedy cannot be separated from the political climate of the time and the growing movement advocating greater recognition of Kabyle rights and identity.

During that period, Ferhat Mehenni had become one of the most visible voices defending the political aspirations of Kabylia. His activism and public positions generated significant controversy and opposition. Reports from that era describe threats directed at him, warning of severe consequences for pursuing his political objectives. In retrospect, those threats cast a dark shadow over the events that followed.

Yet beyond political analysis lies a far more human story: the story of a father confronted with the unimaginable loss of a child.

The death of Améziane represented a painful turning point. For most parents, the loss of a son or daughter is a grief that never truly disappears. Such suffering often leaves permanent scars. What has impressed many observers, however, is the way Ferhat Mehenni transformed personal tragedy into renewed determination. Rather than abandoning his convictions, he continued his advocacy with resilience and unwavering commitment.

His journey reflects a strength deeply rooted in Kabyle culture and history—a tradition that values dignity, perseverance, solidarity, and loyalty to one’s principles. These qualities have enabled generations of Kabyles to endure hardship while preserving their identity and their aspirations.

Remembering Améziane is therefore not only an act of mourning; it is also an affirmation of memory itself. His name evokes the countless families who have experienced loss and who continue to seek truth, justice, and recognition. It reminds us that behind every political conflict are human lives, families, and stories that deserve to be remembered.

Today, we pay tribute to Améziane Mehenni with respect and reflection. We honor the memory of a young man whose life ended far too soon, and we extend our solidarity to his family, especially to his father, whose courage in the face of adversity continues to inspire many.

May the memory of Améziane endure, and may it serve as a reminder of the values of dignity, perseverance, and hope that continue to guide those who seek a better future for Kabylia.
