Petition initiated by Rachid Bandou, sponsored by Mario Beaulieu– member of the Canadian Parliament
Considering that:
– On Algerian and Kabylian soil, hundreds of people, both men and women, are currently being detained for peacefully exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression;
– There are reports of inhumane and degrading treatment, including cases of torture and sexual assault;
– These abuses are part of a systematic crackdown orchestrated by the authoritarian Algerian regime, which relies on a repressive legal framework;
– This legal framework is used to criminalize political activism, particularly of Kabylian activists and advocates of the Kabylian people’s right to self-determination.
We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada,, call upon the Minister of Foreign Affairs to:
1. Publicly condemn arbitrary detentions and the repressive use of force against the Kabylian civilian population;
2. Call for the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience in Algeria, the majority of whom are Kabylians;
3. Reaffirm Canada’s commitment to human rights, freedom of expression, the right to self-determination, and justice for all peoples.
