Kabylia—The peaceful Kabylian activist Madjid Aggad was sentenced to five years in prison by the Algerian colonial court of Tuviret.
Mr Aggad was a victim of a first arrest in 2022, and served two-year arbitrary detention, then he was detained again in July 2024, a few months after his release.
Renowned for his non-violent commitment and activism for Kabylia, Madjid Aggad has never committed any crime. His only “crime”: having publicly expressed his support for the Kabylian political detainees who were imprisoned for having loudly affirmed their Kabylian identity.
This heavy and wrongfully condemnation illustrates once again the systematic repression orchestrated by the Algerian colonial regime against dissident voices in Kabylia.
The Algerian state seeks, through fear, prison and judicial terror, to muzzle any Kabylian activist who speaks out about fundamental rights.
Currently detained in the colonial prison of Tuviret, Madjid Aggad became a symbol of the Algerian brutal intimidation. However, his peaceful commitment and unwavering attachment to Kabylia strengthen not only the determination of Mr. Aggad, but also the entire people of Kabylia to continue its struggle for independence.
