Dark spring 2001

Kabylia has endured after Algeria’s independence a systematic racism and discrimination because it refuses to be alienated to the Arabic and Islamic world. However, that resistance against assimilation and identity cleansing has rushed Algerian state to develop a new strategy to subdue the Kabylian people by violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Therefore, the new plan of Algeria was set to soften and capitulate Kabylia by using excessive repression to terrorize Kabylians in their proper land, soul, and mind. Indeed, it was an earth-scorched policy that was implemented by Algeria after its independence until today. Thus, the first aggression of Kabylia was in 1963, when it lost over 400 Kabylians who fought against French colonialism during Algeria’s independence struggle (1954-1962), because they quickly understood that the country they liberated had become hostile and unfair to Kabylia.

The second, it was during spring 1980. Kabylia’s youth demonstration to demand recognition of Amazigh culture and identity was met by an unbearable level of violence from the Algerian police forces. The aftermath of this aggression was at least thousand injured, several arrestations, many female students were raped, and several students were expelled, and denied pursuing their education.

The third, it was in 2001, after a deliberate assassination of a high school student–in la gendarmerie nationale department, an uprising engulfed Kabylia to claim justice against impunity. The Algerian military regime responded brutally by using means of war against unarmed civilians, which resulted in 130 civilians killed, and over 6000 injured.

The fourth, in 2021, Algeria has declared the Kabylia Self-determination Movement (MAK), which is a peaceful movement seeking independence through a referendum under United Nations monitoring, as a terrorist organization without any valid proof, merely to clear its way to repression. To do so, Algeria amended the 87 bis Article of penal code to use bogus terrorism charges to quell Kabylia’s self-determination movement. The consequences of this designation were terrible to human rights in Kabylia, in so far Algeria criminal regime has arrested and jailed more than 500 innocent Kabylians, closed 34 Christians churches, and condemned arbitrarily 38 innocent kabylians to death sentence. All these condemnations were pronounced by denying to the victims the right to a fair trial.
