Vegayeth University

( Vegayeth, Kabylia )– Samir Larabi, a doctoral student in sociology at the Abderahmane Mira University of Vgayet, published a text on Facebook on Monday, November 24, 2025 denouncing abuses of power and attacks on academic freedoms within his university. According to him, his application for a doctoral graduation, filed since June 2023, would have been arbitrarily blocked by the university president and vice-president in charge of post-graduation.

In his public statement, Samir Larabi accuses the administration of censoring his thesis, ignoring his written requests and disseminating false information involving security services. The doctoral student claims to have exhausted all recourses since the 2023/2024 academic year, and has had to modify his thesis several times under pressure from the administration, without his graduation being scheduled.

Larabi Samir also points out that the scientific councils that validated his thesis are mostly composed of specialists in  humanities and social sciences, while those responsible for blocking his graduation are trained in physical sciences. According to him, this situation highlights bureaucratic practices that hurt careers of young researchers and academic freedom.

The doctoral student calls on the university and judicial authorities to examine this case and to publicly justify the prolonged blocking of his claim, which is related to a thesis on the deconstruction of neocolonialist knowledge on Kabylia.

This case illustrates the persistent tensions related to the colonial character of Algeria in Kabylia, where the production of independent and critical knowledge clashes with administrative structures that reproduce logics of domination inherited from the past. It raises worrying questions about respect for the rights of students and researchers, and about the independence of academic institutions in the face of bureaucratic pressures. Observers and actors in the academic world are now waiting for concrete answers to ensure that science and academic freedom can fully express in Kabylia.
